Discovery Challenge Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC)
RJ has been interested in robotics from a young age. In 2002 when RJ was only 14 he was selected to participate in a nationwide science fair the, DCYSC. Winners from US local science fairs, over 4,000 applicants, were narrowed down to 40 finalists. This group of teens then competed in a week long challenge to name a winner. The challenge was also filmed and debuted as a special on the Discovery Channel.
RJ ranked in the top 10 of the finalists and was awarded a "Dream Science Trip" to JPL in California. He was also featured on the TV show as a main character. Discovery traveled to his hometown and filmed him working on robots in his basement workshop. He also was shown launching a six foot tall trebuchet that he built with his father.
